The Institute for Strategic Insights and Research (ISIR) successfully conducted its fourth (4th) Research Methodology Training from May 6–8, 2025, at Ambassador Hotel in Hargeisa. Facilitated by Fardous Ali and Dr. SarahJoy Leitch, the three-day intensive course aimed to strengthen the research capacity of young scholars and professionals in Somaliland. With a total of 14 attending the training, the course guided participants through the research cycle, from foundational concepts such as paradigms and theories to practical applications like research design, data collection methods, and academic writing. A strong emphasis was placed on contextualizing research within local realities, including discussions around decolonising research practices. Each participant came prepared with a research topic of their interest, which they refined during the course using the skills and feedback provided. The training was interactive, combining lectures, group work, practical exercises, and peer feedback to foster both understanding and application. By the final day, participants delivered well-developed research presentations, reflecting significant progress and high standard work. Topics ranged from public service delivery and education to climate change, humanitarian aid, and legal reform. The training concluded with presentations, closing remarks from ISIR leadership, and a celebratory lunch.

ISIR’s annual research workshop is a yearly learning event designed to cultivate research excellence and foster intellectual exchange in Somaliland. It brings together emerging researchers and expert facilitators in a collaborative environment where mutual learning is encouraged and valued. The workshop is structured to enhance participants’ research skills through interactive sessions, peer feedback, and guided mentorship, ensuring a balance between theoretical foundations and practical application. In addition to skill development, the workshop also serves as a vital platform for professional networking, enabling participants to build meaningful connections. By creating a space for both learning and dialogue, the workshop contributes to the development of a vibrant research community and supports the production of high-quality, contextually relevant research.
