Research Skills and Culture Training Series Fourth Cohort

1. Description

The Institute for Strategic Insights and Research (ISIR Institute) is excited to announce a three-day training program for the fourth cohort of early-career researchers, marking its third consecutive year of commitment to fostering the development of new researchers. This initiative falls within the institute’s broader strategy to bolster young scholars across the Horn of Africa region. The training is designed to encompass two pivotal areas: Research Methods and Analysis, ensuring a comprehensive learning experience. Participants will have the opportunity to engage in mentorship should they opt to explore a specific research topic further.

The program is structured to include a mix of lectures, tutorials, and working groups, all aimed at enhancing networking opportunities and encouraging interactive learning. Our goal is to develop reflexive practitioners who are not only confident but also conduct their work with the utmost respect and integrity. The training will span three days and is set to take place in a classroom setting.

3. Format of the event

  • Session 1: Introductory courses and basic exercises (possibly on computers) to reinforce the knowledge of the topic for mid-career professionals; professionals will be split into smaller groups of two to work on the exercises,
  • Session 2: More advanced lectures for everyone and exercise sessions for mid-career professionals.
  • Session 3: Exercise sessions and discussion will continue in/between session 1 and 2.

4. Trainers

  • The three-day course will be facilitated by two trainers, who will both be present for the entirety of the three days to guarantee the effective execution of interactive exercises  (e.g. role play).

5. Assessment criteria

The selection of applications will be based on the following assessment criteria and weightings:

  • Skills and expertise (50%) – Applicants are required to submit concise CVs (limited to two pages) demonstrating their experiences and capabilities.
  • Motivation (50%) A motivation letter (not exceeding 500 words) should articulate the applicants’ shared enthusiasm for connecting with and contributing to the development of Somaliland’s next generation of researchers, to effectively shape public policy design and debates.

6. Evaluation Committee

The evaluation committee will consist of the ISIR Institute leadership and advisors specifically appointed for this call.

7. Applicant Requirements

  • The applicant should be an early career research professional.
  • Proficiency in English, writing, and reading.
  • Applicants must carefully review the preliminary workshop details before applying to fully grasp the courses’ demanding nature, including reading materials, schedule, and pre-course assignments.
  • Preparation for the course will begin one month in advance.
  • Absences during the workshop are not permitted, except in extreme circumstances or emergencies.
  • A pledge to (a) complete the pre-course preparation assignment, (b) attend all the days of the course , and (c) stay at the designated course location at all times is required.

8. Costs

  • Participation in the program is free of charge.
  • The ISIR Institute will cover meals and provide reading materials throughout the training.
  • The ISIR Institute will not be responsible for any perdiums , accommodation or transport costs incurred
  • Participants are expected to handle their own transportation and accommodation expenses, if applicable.

  • The course is limited to 12 participants and is expected to be highly competitive.
